PostHeaderIcon Because Honesty is Valuable

Lately I keep getting questions on formspring regarding my frank attitude. I don't know about you cats and kittens, but I dig the whole "honest is the best policy" thing. Or rather, honesty sure is swell. Reality is something you can rely upon. Unless you're an existentialist, that is. It's utterly bewildering to me to think that people WANT to be patronized.
This is Chester. He's 17. He rolls in catnip patches in the summer. Look at his adorable face. This has nothing to do with the topic, but it was requested on formspring that I show pictures of my cats (via my mother's Flickr account TimmersChester).
Leelu Dallas Multipass (1) and Mimi (2.5). Squishy babies in a basket!

Sadly these babies will stay here when I move westward. Skyping with cats is cool, right?

Brutal honesty is a phrase that bothers me. I don't think honesty is brutal. It can hurt, I guess, but it's reality. I wouldn't make a good Mary Poppins. A spoonful of sugar with your medicine? I think not. Swallow it, bitch!
I think the biggest problem is not everyone gets sarcasm. Or they feel sarcasm is somehow beneath them. Silly goose, sarcasm is hilarious! Hence the laughter that follows. ;) Chester agrees. He told me so.

I must add that choosing to answer a question and not choosing to do so is important. I think we'd all rather I decline to reveal every tidbit and facet of my process than simply lie about it as some do. I lay so much of myself bare with every piece I show, that going further with the process of where it came from and how it was prepared can leave me raw. Not always, but sometimes. Not all artists agree with that. I also don't think those artists really make a good living solely off their work as their name (i.e. they work for a corporation or part-time with their craft).  Perhaps I'm wrong in that assumption. I'll ask Leelu and Mimi.

PostHeaderIcon Plastic Pool Party

Knee deep in this mess of plastic goodness.
Latest order from the printer arrived yesterday. Assembling and gluing accessories as fast and skillfully as I can for wholesale orders. Go, little Acrylicana Accessories, go!
They'll take up space in some new shops rather soon (the shops aren't knew, but my work in them surely is).

Photos of completed shoes will come tomorrow, as well as sketches and lineart on those in progress.

Been getting interesting e-mails as of late. Hopefully I'm playing my cards right. More news eventually.
Also, still no sign of Livestream working for me. Others have said that reinstalling Flash did the trick. I've done that 2 times already (once on my own and once when they answered my help desk query).

Maybe third time is the charm?

PostHeaderIcon Fruity Girls Prints

The lovely folk over at Happy Panda Toys licensed some designs from me. Namely, my fruity girls (which previously existed only in Carrot (not pictured) or Lemon girl form).

Each is available as a 10x12 print. Matte, archival inks (the colours are SO bright and rich).
Signed and numbered by me.
I was signing them last week -- the box they arrived in was SO huge and it took hours to get through..b/c I'm slow and was trying to kick cats off it. And by kick I mean HUG.
Strawberry
Lemon
Lime
Blueberry
(links for the specific prints)

Only 25 of each design are available.

Retweet, blog, tumblr, etc etc. Spread this around ;)

PostHeaderIcon Progress and Prints

Quick update today. Current shoes in progress:

Space themed.

I have to add a lot in terms of stars and refining details. Won't be painting it as a fully rendered piece, but more of a design.

more with those zom-zom-zombies and rainbows.

Those metallic prints. I want to do more work like this -- deep, dark backgrounds and bright, bright elements.

I have 3 of each. Sadly this one was cropped oddly by the printer. Next time I have to prepare the files myself, crop marks and all.
Waiting on shipments of supplies for wholesale orders and merchandise. Seriously waiting. One order (major one) was supposed to be delivered last Thursday, and it's still not here. I keep asking for a tracking number, but have yet to have an email response. So worried.

PostHeaderIcon Marching Along

Bookmarks and mini postcards arrived today. I used 48hourprint for these.

Double sided. Two shown to display each side.
One bookmark and one postcard will join the next 100 parcels packed up from my shop. This includes orders from February 27th onwards (I think -- I was in the middle of packing them today. Will continue later and probably tomorrow, as I've got a lot to do).

Continuing on with shoes. Been doodling out designs for a really fantastic pair of knee-high converse.

The commissioner wanted zombies and rainbows.

I was working out a possible composition in SAI when this came up (see what staying up late and watching episodes of Beverly Hills 90210 does to you?). Working on it for a poster piece and printed merchandise (bookmarks).
One of the current versions looks like this. I don't know if I want to continue painting that (once I get the current shoe commissions underway and have extra time) or to just work it out in Illustrator.

Got some prints I ordered from ezprints today  as well (it's been quite the mail day). The metallic prints are gorgeous. The glossies are ok. My Epson does a much better job (giclee FTW!) in my opinion. Seems I need to order some new paper, then. But OH I'll definitely get more mettalics soon. Will snap a pic later. ;)

PostHeaderIcon Doodles and Jesus

Hey it's MONDAY! And that means it's time to share doodles! (does it really? I may be making this up -- but I DO have doodles to share).

Bye-bye, Globby!

Playing with skulls. I was trying to do stuff for guys and it still turned into girly fantastic. Sorry boys, my drawings are really gay for ladies.

In progress shoes. I have 3 pairs left to go in the current crop of commissions. 5 more slots open, though (for more than just shoes, even). ;) Or 10. Idk. 20? I'll consider all commissions right now. I'm THAT open.

Today I was checking e-mails and lining up freelance work. A decently big job came my way and I was jam hot excited. T-shirt designs. Tens of them. After the client agreed to the price quotes and we discussed the general feel, a HUGE bomb was dropped on me. The job wasn't just any illustration gig, but a gig for a clothing line promoting JESUS. (I have it in all caps because that's how my brain reacted)

I don't know why the potential client didn't bring that up sooner. Maybe even from the get-go. I just can't take on work that's so far and away from my own beliefs regarding reality. Maybe if I was a robot or merely a drawing service versus a living, breathing artist with her own convictions I could consider doing any job. It just bothers me that here was a damn fine gig, but I had to turn it down. It wasn't JUST "hey draw this Jesus fellow". It was "LET'S SPREAD THE WORD OF JESUS CHRIST, OUR LORD AND SAVIOR!"

For future reference, potential clients to any artist in the world, check if they're cool with creating religious propaganda before asking about their rates.

My work has never really been about religion (or the lack thereof) or politics. For the most part, it's secular rainbows. Just because my name is Mary...OY VEY!
